Technical Overview
DBC051LCDAFN50R050A Datasheet provides the technical specifications for a
5.1-inch square AHVA TFT LCD with a native visible resolution of
480 × 480 RGB, 500 cd/m² typical brightness and a
24-bit parallel RGB interface. The module offers a 91.44 × 91.44 mm active area,
1000:1 typical contrast ratio and 80° typical viewing angles in all four directions.
DBC051LCDAFN50R050A 5.1-Inch Square TFT LCD Overview
The DBC051LCDAFN50R050A is an a-Si transmissive TFT-LCD using
AHVA (Advanced Hyper View Angle) technology and a normally-black display structure.
The module integrates the TFT-LCD panel, driver circuitry, FPC and LED backlight, with the timing controller
embedded in the source driver.
A distinctive feature of this model is its 1:1 square display format. The specification
describes the panel as a 5.1-inch display derived from a 7-inch 800 × 480 LCD structure, while the visible
display resolution is defined as 480 × 480 RGB. This makes the module particularly different
from conventional rectangular 800 × 480 or widescreen TFT panels.
480×480 Square Active Display Area
The DBC051LCDAFN50R050A provides a square 91.44 × 91.44 mm active area within an overall
module size of approximately 106.0 × 106.0 × 4.5 mm. Its 480 × 480 pixel matrix gives equal
horizontal and vertical pixel counts, which is useful for compact graphical user interfaces designed around
a centered or symmetrical layout.
The physical specification defines an RGB horizontal stripe arrangement and supports
16.7 million colors. The display surface uses an
anti-glare (AG) treatment to reduce direct surface reflections.

24-Bit Parallel RGB Interface
Unlike LVDS-based square panels, the DBC051LCDAFN50R050A uses a
24-bit parallel RGB interface. Eight data lines are provided for each red, green and blue
channel, allowing full 8-bit-per-color RGB transmission.
The main FPC uses the Hirose FH52-50S-0.5SH connector and includes 50 pins.
Display data and control signals include:
- DR0–DR7: 8-bit red pixel data
- DG0–DG7: 8-bit green pixel data
- DB0–DB7: 8-bit blue pixel data
- DCLK: pixel input clock
- DE: data enable
- HS: horizontal synchronization
- VS: vertical synchronization
- MODE: HV or DE timing mode selection
The MODE signal allows the module to operate in either HV synchronization mode or
DE mode. Horizontal and vertical scan directions can also be controlled through the SHLR
and UPDN pins.
SPI Control Interface and Register Configuration
In addition to the 24-bit RGB video interface, the module provides an
SPI serial control interface through CS, SCL, SDA and SDO signals.
The specification includes serial-interface timing, read/write timing diagrams and an extensive internal
register table for panel configuration.
If SPI configuration is not required, the datasheet states that these SPI-related pins may be left floating.
For applications using the serial control interface, the specification defines a minimum serial clock period
of 330 ns, corresponding to approximately 3 MHz maximum clock operation based on that timing.
500 cd/m² Brightness and AHVA Wide Viewing Angles
The optical specification lists a center luminance of
450 cd/m² minimum, 500 cd/m² typical and 600 cd/m² maximum under the specified measurement
conditions.
The AHVA normally-black panel provides a 1000:1 typical contrast ratio and wide viewing
characteristics. The datasheet specifies typical viewing angles of approximately
80° top, 80° bottom, 80° left and 80° right.
Key optical characteristics include:
- Brightness: 450 cd/m² min., 500 cd/m² typ., 600 cd/m² max.
- Contrast ratio: 800:1 min., 1000:1 typ.
- Viewing angle: 80° typical in top, bottom, left and right directions
- Rise response time: 9 ms typical
- Fall response time: 11 ms typical
- 9-point luminance uniformity: 80% minimum
The optical values are specified under laboratory measurement conditions after panel warm-up, with
brightness measured at the center of the display.
Panel Power Supply Requirements
DBC051LCDAFN50R050A requires several TFT panel supply rails. The digital logic supply
VDD is 3.3V typical, while the analog and gate-driver sections use additional voltages.
| Power Rail | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| VDD | 3.3 V |
| AVDD | 13 V |
| VGH | 20 V |
| VGL | -8 V |
| VCOM | Approx. 4.65 V tentative value |
The specification also provides recommended gamma 2.2 reference voltages for V1 through V18.
These multi-rail power requirements are important when designing a custom RGB controller or power board
for the raw TFT panel.
LED Backlight Specifications
The LED backlight uses a total of 18 LEDs, arranged as six strings with three LEDs per
string.
- LED current: 20 mA typical per string
- Maximum LED current: 35 mA per string
- LED voltage: 9.0 V typical, 10.2 V maximum
- Specified LED lifetime: 15,000 hours
The datasheet defines the listed LED lifetime under its stated current and temperature conditions,
with backlight output decreasing from the original brightness level over operating time.
RGB Input Timing Characteristics
The DBC051LCDAFN50R050A specification defines a typical pixel clock frequency of
37.0 MHz, with an operating range from approximately 33.2 MHz to 40.0 MHz.
An important integration detail is that the timing table specifies a
horizontal display area THD of 800 pixel clocks and a
vertical display area TVD of 480 lines, even though the visible LCD area is specified as
480 × 480 pixels.
This should not be automatically treated as a documentation error. The same datasheet explicitly states
that the 5.1-inch square panel is derived from a 7-inch 800 × 480 LCD. Therefore, developers
should verify the required RGB data mapping and controller timing before finalizing a custom controller board.
Operating Temperature and Reliability
The absolute maximum ratings list an operating temperature range of -10°C to +60°C
and a storage temperature range of -20°C to +70°C.
The reliability test section further specifies:
- High-temperature storage: +70°C for 240 hours
- Low-temperature storage: -20°C for 240 hours
- High-temperature operation: +60°C for 240 hours
- Low-temperature operation: -10°C for 240 hours
- High-temperature/high-humidity operation: +60°C, 90% RH for 240 hours
- Heat shock: -10°C to +60°C for 100 cycles
- Contact ESD: ±8 kV, Class B
- Air ESD: ±15 kV, Class B
The electrostatic discharge test follows IEC 61000-4-2 test methodology according to the reliability
section of the specification.

For controller-board development, special attention should be paid to the combination of the
480 × 480 visible square display area and the
800-clock horizontal timing definition documented in the original specification.
